In the Afternoon
Tour The Building:
Upon arriving at the telescope, the Day Tech should
tour the building and dome to check to see who is there and what work has
gone on in the day. Check Mouse Traps.
It is imperitive that you inpsect the telescope for
anything that may impede free motion of all axes; azymuth, elevation and all instrument rotators.
This includes inspection of B level azymuth drive area and inside the Cone Room.
- Check Dewars: The instrument dewars should be checked to make
sure they have been recently filled. The liquid nitrogen transfer dewars
should be checked to see if they have enough nigtrogen to last the night, and
if they don't, they should be filled. The dry nitrogen tanks should be
similarly checked, and if they are low, they should be swapped out.
Check Evironmental Conditions:
It is important to determine if conditions are appropriate for opening the mirror covers
or starting the mirror cooling.
Note: that the pms software should be restarted before each night, (ie., pmsgo
and ztof2 in the PMS vncviewer - icon on Ivory's desktop), now is the best time to do
Check With The Observer: See what calibrations will be needed, and if
they need anything for the coming afternoon and night.
Startup The WIYNCS System: It is recommended that you log out of IVORY each day and
start fresh, but before doing so, you will need to shutdown the currently running
WIYNCS system, if running.
Once you have a new login into IVORY, check that the routers are operational. Do this
by opening the VNC viewer to BONE - icon on Ivory's desktop.
With both the WIYN and MPG router operational, and the archiver, you can restart the
WIYNCS system. Open the following windows:
- TCS (make sure there are no EDMG errors)
- WIYN Page
Source The Startup Script In The CLI:
- From the icons on Ivory's desktop start the WIYN-Page, Tip-TCS window
and the CLI
- % source startup.tcl
- NOTE: If you are unsure if the WIYNCS is not already running, source shutdown.tcl first then,
- source startup.tcl. No harm, no fowl if there is no current use of the system.
Start the mirror cooling if appropriate to do so (weather_policies).
Set up for calibrations if appropriate to do so (weather_policies).
Once calibrations have started, don't forget to put the magnetic-backed "caution,
calibrations in progress" sign on the door to the dome (Level 'B'). This is a safety precaution
against unexpected visitors.
