How to use this checklist

The closing checklist is provide directly below. For each item on the closing checklist, there is detailed information further down the page. Just scroll down to find it, or, look in the Nav Bar to your left for the direct link.





The entire closedown checklist must be completed every night prior to leaving the telescope.



Closing Checklist



  1. Conclude observing and turn off guiding
  2. Turn down gain on all cameras
  3. Stow telescope - (click on stow in XTCS GUI)
  4. Wait for dome to Stop at or near 90 degrees
  5. Turn off AUTO
  6. Turn off telescope and building fans
  7. Close mirror cover
  8. Close dome shutter
  9. Turn off drives and pre-Loads
  10. Turn off oil pumps and cancel alarm
  11. Close catwalk doors
  12. Deploy yellow awning

  13. Turn off all monitors and slit camera
  14. Turn on hi dome lights
  15. Move platform under telescope
  16. Turn off cameras on the telescope
  17. Fill dewar - record fill time on clipboard log sheet
  18. Turn on telescope spotlights - near stairway on wall in dome
  19. Fill out NSF Observing Log and submit, and place any Service Requests needed
  20. Open both swinging double doors between visitor gallery and stairwell
  21. Close sliding vent panel on Door into Dome.
  22. Close hallway Door to visitors gallery area
  23. Report night info to the 4meter Operator at x 8620
  24. Close all programs, and log out of teal
You are done closing up.



Closing Checklist - Details



  1. Conclude observing and turn off guiding
  2. In the "GUIDER GUI" select the Off button.


  3. Turn down camera gains
  4. Turn down gains for all of the cameras (the Acquisition, Slit and Guider cameras at the camera control panel


  5. Stow Telescope



  6. Wait for dome to stop moving



  7. Turn off AUTO
  8. Press the AUTO button under STATION SELECT on Panel B. Light in button should go out.


  9. Turn off Telescope and Building fans
  10. Turn off the two green FAN buttons on panel A at console


  11. Close mirror cover
  12. Wait for mirror cover to close all the way.


  13. Close dome shutter
  14. Close the main dome shutter, with the "shutter button" on Panel A.


  15. Turn off Drives and Pre-loads
  16. Press the DRIVE POWER OFF button under DRIVES on Panel A. Button should light up. The DEC PRELOAD OFF and RA PRELOAD OFF buttons should also light up. If they do not, press and hold them until they do.


  17. Turn off Oil Pumps and Cancel Alarm
  18. Press the OIL PUMPS OFF button under PUMPS on Panel A. Button should light up and the sound of the oil pumps should stop.

    Press the CANCEL ALARM button in the bottom left corner of PANEL B. The alarm goes off because there is no longer sufficient oil pressure to support the telescope.


  19. Close Catwalk Doors
  20. Close both of the catwalk access doors


  21. Deploy Yellow Awning
  22. Deploy the yellow protective awning. Use the "remote control" attached to the wall right out side the door in the dome.


  23. Turn off all monitors and slit viewer camera
  24. Turn off Guider, Telescope Status, and Acquisition Monitors in the control room, and the slit viewer camera if in use.


  25. Turn on Hi Dome lights
  26. Press the HI DOME LIGHTS ON/OFF button under LIGHTS on Panel A.


  27. Move Platform Under Telescope
  28. Move the platform under the telescope, this allows you to get at the cameras, and fill the dewar if needed, and it allows the visitors to see the telescope with the platform out of the way of the visitors gallery window.


  29. Turn off telescope cameras
  30. At the telescope, turn off the Guider and Wide Field Camera's if in use.

    Turn these two camras on on the telescope each night,and off in the morning



  31. Fill Dewar - Record fill time on clipboard log sheet
  32. Fill the dewar, be sure to cap the the dewar after your fill, and record the fill time. Do not let the dewar fill intervals exceed 12 hours.


  33. Turn on Telescope Spotlights
  34. The switch is by the stairs leading up off of the observing floor toward the catwalk doors. This lights up the telescope for the families and visitors that come to visit Kitt Peak.


  35. Fill out NSF log, and Place any Final Service Requests
  36. To complete the nightly NSF log submission just go to this link and fill in the form.

    How to Report your Problem and Filling the Service Requests

    When reporting problems, be sure to include the following critical troubleshooting information:

  37. Open double doors at top of stairs
  38. This is so the visitors can have easy access to the visitors gallery.


  39. Close Sliding Vent Panel
  40. Close the sliding vent panel on the door between the dome and the visitors gallery. Just pull the pin and let the door panel slide down.


  41. Close Hallway Door
  42. This keeps visitors out of the observing and control room areas. Be sure this door gets closed, or strangers will be wandering in to your control room with your things in it.


  43. Report info to 4meter Operator at x8620
  44. Each morning, the 4m Operator ( x 8620 ) has to fill out a time use log, including your names, the instrument used, seeing measurements, time spent open, and a report of any problems or issues. They will normally call you at the end of the night. Please call them if you are getting ready to leave and have not given them the needed information yet.


  45. Log out of teal
  46. Click the "Exit XTCS" "big red button" and close all additional programs, being careful to use the "close buttons" provided on the GUIs. Next, click on the corner "K" icon on teal's desktop panel to find the "logout" menu selection to log out of teal.


    You are finished closing up.
